Frequently Asked Questions

What supplies do I need to do acrylic nails?

To apply acrylic nails professionally, here are all the professional acrylic nail supplies you’ll need:

  • Acrylic Powder

  • Monomor Liquid

  • Dappen dish to pour your monomer in

  • Acrylic Brush

  • Primer

Here are some other optional acrylic nail supplies, to help improve your nail sets:

Why do I need monomer for acrylic nails?

Monomer is a liquid that activates the acrylic powder and turns it into a moldable, workable bead. After forming, it allows the product to cure and harden onto the nail. Without monomer, the powder stays dry and unusable.

PLA’s acrylic nail powder is a 2-in-1 formula that can also be used as a dip formula when paired with dip liquids.

Can I use water or rubbing alcohol instead of monomer?

No. Monomer cannot be substituted with water, alcohol or any other household liquid. Monomer has a specific formula that chemically reacts with acrylic powder. Using any other liquid will result in a mixture that does not bond to the nail and may not cure. Always use a professional-grade monomer designed for acrylic systems.

How to remove sticky residue from acrylic?

Once cured, acrylic shouldn’t be sticky. If you are seeing sticky or tacky areas on cured acrylic, you could be using an incorrect ratio of liquid to monomer which could lead to oversaturation. If stickiness is a recurring issue, it may be time to review your liquid-to-powder ratio or switch to a higher quality acrylic system.

Do acrylic nails need to be filled?

Yes. Acrylic nails grow out with the natural nail cycle and require regular fills every 2-3 weeks. This maintains structure, prevents lifting and keeps the nail set looking fresh. Skipping fills increases the risk of lifting or breakage.

How many acrylic fills before a new set?

Technically, if the nails are properly maintained, you shouldn’t need to soak off and start over. With consistent filing, filling, rebalancing, a well-structured set can be maintained. Many experienced nail techs work with the same base set for months, sometimes longer, without removal.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to client preference, nail health, and quality of upkeep.
